Helping the Aged

چکیده
In the field of social work it is hard to measure needs, methods, or results. Social workers are overloaded and do not have either the time or resources to evaluate their efforts. Controversy exists as to whether practical help or specially skilled casework, is more relevant to clients' lives. Miss Goldberg's book is the report of a controlled experiment, the first of its kind in this country, that set out to find solutions to these problems and to apply scientific methods to assessing social work. Over-75's referred to a south London welfare department were randomly assigned either to trained caseworkers or to the ordinary welfare workers of the borough. Social and medical assessments independent of the social workers were made at the outset, and again at the end of 10 months. The experiment was painstakingly designed, and yielded a large amount of material, including the assessments and the social workers' reports. This is analysed with impressive thoroughness, and although no detail is omitted, the material is lucidly organised and expressed and the book is easy to read. It emerges that caseworkers do succeed better than untrained workers, not only in improving clients' morale, but also in reducing their practical needs. They also may uncover problems that otherwise may not come to official notice: for instance they were more likely to identify untreated physical and psychiatric illnesses and to attempt to assuage loneliness.
